ไม้ต้น สูงได้ถึง 15 เมตร ยอดอ่อนสีจางและห้อยลง ใบ เป็นใบประกอบแบบปลายคู่ มีใบย่อย 6-8 คู่ รูปขอบขนาน ถึงแกมรูปไข่ กว้าง 3-4.5 ซม. ยาว 5-15 ซม. ปลายใบเรียวแหลม โคนใบมน ผิวใบเกลี้ยง หูใบหลุดร่วงง่าย ดอก ออกเป็นช่อห้อยลง ดอกย่อย สีแดงสด ขนาด 5-8 ซม. กลีบรองดอก 4 กลีบ คล้ายกลีบดอก กลีบดอก 5 กลีบ ขนาดไม่เท่ากัน สองกลีบล่างขนาดเล็ก กลีบข้าง รูปช้อนสีแดงส่วนปลายกลีบมนมีสีแกมเหลือง กลีบบนแผ่รูปพัด ขอบเป็นคลื่น มีจุดและแถบคล้ายรูปตัววีสีแดง ล้อมรอบด้วยแถบ สีเหลือง เกสรผู้ 10 อัน ก้านชูเกสรเพศเมียสีแดง ยาว 4 ซม. ผล เป็นฝักแบน รูปขอบขนานโค้ง กว้าง 3-4 ซม. ยาว 15-20 ซม. ผลแก่แตกตามรอย ตะเข็บข้างภายใน มี 4-6 เมล็ด รูปกลม

Tree, up to 15 m high; young shoots pendulous, pale colour. Leaves paripinnate; leaflets 6-8 pairs, oblong to ovate-oblong, 5-15 cm long by 3-4.5cm wide, glabrous; base obtuse to rounded; apex acuminate; stipule caducous. Inflorescence terminal raceme, lax, pendulous. Flowers bright red, 5-8 cm long; calyx 4, petaloid; corolla 5, unequal, the lower 2 minute; wings spathulate, red, with rounded yellow apex; upper petal fan shaped with wavy edge, prominent with red spots and red V-shape and surrounded by yellow patch near the apex; stamens 10; ovary adnated to the receptacle; style red, 4 cm long. Pod flat, oblong, falcate, 15-20 cm long by 3-4 cm wide, dehiscing along the suture. Seeds 4-6, orbicular, compressed.
